Betting glossary — A to Z

The terms you’ll encounter when betting on the World Cup, defined honestly.

A

Accumulator (acca): A multi-leg bet where every selection must win for the bet to pay out. Higher risk, higher reward.
Asian handicap: A handicap that removes the draw outcome by giving one team a goal start.

B

Bankroll: The total amount of money you’ve allocated for betting.
BTTS: Both Teams To Score. Yes/No market.
Banker: The leg of an accumulator you’re most confident in.

C

Cash-out: Settling a bet early for a guaranteed amount before the event finishes.
Closing line value (CLV): Beating the final odds quoted before kickoff. The single best predictor of long-term profitability.

D

Draw No Bet (DNB): A market where your stake refunds if the match draws. Removes one of three outcomes.
Dutching: Splitting stakes across multiple selections to guarantee equal profit on any outcome.

E

Each-way: Two bets in one — half on the outright winner, half on a top-N place finish (e.g. top 4 in tournament).
Edge: The advantage you have over the bookmaker’s implied probability.

H

Hedging: Placing a counter-bet to lock in profit or limit loss.
HT/FT (Half-Time/Full-Time): A market predicting the result at both half-time and full-time.

I

In-play (live): Betting on a match that has already started.
Implied probability: The percentage chance baked into a set of odds.

L

Lay bet: Betting against an outcome (only on betting exchanges).
Line: The current odds being offered.

O

Odds boost: An operator-enhanced price, usually for marketing.
Outright: A bet on the winner of an entire competition.

P

Push: A tied bet that refunds the stake.
Parlay: American term for accumulator.

S

Same-game parlay (SGP): Multiple bets within one match combined into a single bet.
Sharp: A professional or semi-professional bettor.
Square: A casual bettor whose action moves lines toward popular sides.
Spread: Point handicap, or the difference between bid and ask on betting exchanges.

V

Value bet: A wager where your estimate of the true probability exceeds the implied probability.
Vig (juice): The bookmaker’s built-in margin.

W

Wagering requirement: The multiple of a bonus you must restake before it’s withdrawable.

How to use this glossary

Sports betting has its own vocabulary, much of it borrowed from horseracing and stock-trading. The terms below are the ones you'll actually encounter when betting on the FIFA World Cup 2026. They're grouped by alphabet (jump links above), with cross-references to related concepts.

If a term you're looking for isn't here, email editor@fifaworldcupbetting.com — we'll add it within 24 hours. Otherwise, use the table of contents above to jump to a specific letter.

Why vocabulary matters

Most beginners lose money not because they pick the wrong teams, but because they don't understand what they're actually betting on. "Both teams to score" is a different bet from "over 1.5 goals". An "Asian handicap of -1.5" pays out differently from a "European handicap of -1". Knowing the language is the first edge.

The terms most often misunderstood: wagering requirement (multiplier on bonus, not stake), each-way (UK only — splits stake across win + place), Asian handicap (no draws), cash-out (sportsbook offers to settle early at a margin), vig (built-in book margin), closing line value (the only metric that predicts long-term profit).
